1. Enter the bill amount. Use the pre-tax subtotal if the receipt itemizes it — that is the conventional tipping base in the US. If only the total is visible, the difference is small (about 1.5–2% of the bill in most states).
2. Check for an included service charge. Many restaurants add an automatic gratuity (commonly 18%) for parties of six or more, and some add a service charge to every bill. If one is printed, additional tipping is optional.
3. Pick the tip rate for the context. US table service: 15–20%, with 18–20% typical in cities. Counter service and takeout are discretionary. Delivery commonly runs 10–15% with a floor of a few dollars on small orders.
4. Set the number of people splitting. Divide the full total — subtotal, tax, and tip — by the party size. For very uneven orders, split by each person's share instead and allocate tax and tip proportionally.
5. Round and settle. Round each share up to a convenient figure so collective rounding never shorts the server — four people paying $40 flat on a $161.28 total leaves the tip $1.28 light.
