Common mistakes with a 50 A, 240 V EV charger circuit

Wiring it with 8/2 NM-B because "8 AWG is the answer." The 50 A rating for 8 AWG is the 75 °C column; NM-B is limited to 60 °C (NEC 334.80), where 8 AWG carries only 40 A. A 50 A continuous circuit in NM-B needs 6 AWG. The 8 AWG result on this page assumes THHN/THWN-2 or similar in conduit with 75 °C-rated terminations per NEC 110.14(C).

Why does this page pair 8 AWG wire with a 70 A breaker?
Because the two are sized by different rules for a continuous load. The conductor must carry the 50 A draw (8 AWG at 75 °C = 50 A, Table 310.16). The overcurrent device must be at least 125 % of the continuous current — 62.5 A — and NEC 240.6(A)'s next standard size is 70 A. NEC 240.4(B) permits protecting a 50 A conductor at the next standard device size in this arrangement; installers who prefer visible margin run 6 AWG instead, and many do.
Can aluminum be used for this circuit?
Yes, and for feeders of this size it is common. The equivalent aluminum conductor is larger — 6 AWG aluminum carries 40 A at 60 °C and 50 A at 75 °C, so a 50 A continuous EV circuit in aluminum typically lands at 4 AWG. Terminations must be rated AL, prepared per the lug manufacturer's instructions, and torqued to specification.
Does 1.6 % voltage drop matter for charging speed?
Practically, no. The EVSE and the vehicle's onboard charger regulate charging current; a 3.9 V sag at the input translates to roughly 190 W of loss in the cable at full draw — about 1.6 % of an 11–12 kW session, or a few cents per charge. Drop starts to matter on long detached-garage feeders of 100 ft and more, where the same math can push the conductor up a size.
