Material Density Converter

Density links a material's volume to its weight: multiply volume by density to get mass, or divide mass by density to get volume. That is how two cubic yards of gravel becomes a tonnage a truck has to carry, or a 25 kg bag of sand becomes the litres it fills.

The conversion matters whenever material is sold by one measure and handled by another — ordering concrete, soil, or aggregate by the cubic yard, checking freight and axle weight limits, sizing tanks and hoppers, or estimating what a slab or backfill actually weighs.

Density is not a fixed constant. Moisture, compaction, temperature, and grade can shift real-world values by 10% or more, so the converter reports source-backed density ranges rather than a single number. When the load matters — structural, freight, or safety decisions — size against the high end of the range.

22.56965941tonne

Concrete, normal weight: 12.3 yd3 becomes 22.56965941 tonne.

Density:2400 kg/m3Range:2200-2500 kg/m3Confidence:variablePractical range:20.68885446 - 23.51006188 tonne

Density is variable; use supplier, lab, or contract-specific density for critical work.

Density source & professional warnings

Variable bulk-density estimate. Common reinforced concrete estimate.

Use supplier, lab, or contract-specific density for critical work.

Material densities are planning estimates. Moisture, temperature, compaction, alloy composition, and product grade can change real shipment or engineering values. Use supplier or lab density for contract-critical work.

Derivation steps
  1. Convert volume: 12.3 yd3 x 0.764554857984 = 9.40402475 m3.
  2. Apply density: 9.40402475 m3 x 2400 kg/m3 = 22 569.65940769 kg.
  3. Convert mass: 22 569.65940769 kg / 1000 = 22.56965941 tonne.
  4. Sig-fig compliance is off; display uses practical precision.
