Depreciation Parameters
MACRS assumes a half-year convention unless the mid-quarter convention applies.
What is MACRS Depreciation?
MACRS (Modified Accelerated Cost Recovery System) is the standard depreciation method used for tax purposes in the United States. Unlike Straight-Line depreciation, MACRS allows businesses to deduct a larger portion of the asset's cost in the early years of its life, providing a faster tax benefit.
The Half-Year Convention
Our calculator strictly adheres to the IRS Half-Year Convention. This rule assumes that all property placed in service during the year was placed in service exactly in the middle of the year (July 1st). Because of this, a "5-Year" asset actually takes 6 tax years to fully depreciate.
