What is Dimensional (DIM) Weight?
Carriers like UPS, FedEx, and USPS charge based on the amount of space a package takes up in their trucks and airplanes, not just how heavy it is. This is called Dimensional Weight.
If you ship a large box full of pillows, it might only weigh 5 lbs on a scale. However, because it takes up so much room, the carrier will calculate its "DIM Weight" (e.g., 30 lbs) and charge you for a 30 lb package.
The Billable Weight Rule
Shipping carriers will always charge you the greater of the Actual Weight or the Dimensional Weight. This final number is known as the Billable Weight. Our engine automatically calculates this for you based on the exact dimensional divisor of your chosen carrier.
