Understanding NMFC Freight Class
When shipping Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) freight in North America, your shipping rate is heavily determined by your NMFC (National Motor Freight Classification) Freight Class. There are 18 standard freight classes, ranging from Class 50 (cheapest) to Class 500 (most expensive).
The Role of Density (PCF)
While factors like stowability and liability affect freight class, the primary metric is **Density**, measured in Pounds per Cubic Foot (PCF).
High-density items (like a pallet of steel auto parts) take up very little space in the truck relative to their weight. They have a high PCF and receive a low, cheap Freight Class (e.g., Class 50). Low-density items (like a box of ping-pong balls) take up a huge amount of truck space but weigh nothing. They have a low PCF and receive a very expensive Freight Class (e.g., Class 500).
